Guwahati: The Deepor Beel Winter Birding Festival (WBF) conducted by 7WEAVES Research has revealed a significant decline in the number of birds visiting the Deepor Beel wetland. The study, which was conducted from January 7 to 17, 2024, recorded a total of 11,000 birds of 155 species, compared to 28,000 birds of 161 species in the previous year.
The decrease in bird population was attributed to several factors, including habitat loss, reduced food availability, and increased human activity in the area. The findings suggest that the protection of Deepor Beel as a bird sanctuary is essential for the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystem health.
The WBF 2024 also identified several hotspots for bird migration outside the protected zone, including Dharapur, Jalukbari, and Boragaon. However, some regions, such as Boragaon, Pamohi, and Jalukbari, were difficult to access due to rising water levels during the study period.
