Assam: 3 arrested for swindling money from people for fake job offers

Diphu: Moon Engtipi and Simeon Terang were arrested by Diphu police on Wednesday here; after a complaint was lodged against them by one of their victims in the cash-for-job scam.

The two were produced in the district judicial court here.

A case has been registered against them under Diphu police station case No. 56/23 under section 406/420/34 of IPC.

Engtipi is the former district secretary of ST Morcha, BJP-East Karbi Anglong district.

Briefing media persons here today at Diphu police station, Officer-in-charge JS Khobung said, “On Wednesday last (May 24) an FIR was lodged against Moon Engtipi and Simeon Terang by Sadhin Killing of Howraghat for taking money from him.”

From 2020 to 2023, the duo collected money from different persons by promising government jobs in return. Both Terang and Engtipi have been sent to court, the O/c informed.

Earlier this month, one of the victims who fell prey to the cash-for-job scam, Nobin Chandra Goyari at Langhin LAMPS office told media persons alleging that Moon Engtipi took Rs 8 lakh from him with the promise of giving the job to his son under Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).

Goyari is a resident of Langhin.

Goyari said, “Moon Engtipi has promised me a job as Forester-I for my son. I thought it to be true and in September 2020 I gave an amount of Rs 8 lakh in cash to Moon Engtipi. Engtipi told me that she has a close relationship with CM, CEM and MLA and getting the job is guaranteed.”

He further said, “As the job was not given to my son, the Bodo organisation of Langhin issued a letter to Moon Engtipi to either return the money or to cease her property. A letter was also written to the Bodo organisation through MLA Bidyasing Engleng’s official pad citing that the money could not be refunded as the KAAC has not been settled properly. I received the letter from Moon Engtipi.”

Goyari also informed that Engtipi and her team took money from 20 persons in exchange for a job.

Another victim, Raju Dev of Langhin, also said in June 2021, he gave Rs 9.85 lakh to Engtipi for the post of Grade IV in the Irrigation department.

Sadhin Killing, who filed an FIR against Engtipi and her associate, said Simeon Terang has approached him and took Rs 10 lakh to work together as a team in Lahorijan and Garampani tax gate as the tender had been settled in the name of CEM’s wife.
