Dibrugarh: In a joint operation, security forces apprehended an active cadre of the banned insurgent outfit NSCN(K-Angmai) from the Pangchau area of Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district on Wednesday evening.
The arrested insurgent has been identified as SS 2nd Lieutenant Wanglai Wangsa alias Laipa Wangsa.
During the operation, security personnel recovered a semi-automatic pistol, one magazine and five rounds of live 7.65 mm ammunition from his possession.
According to police sources, Wangsa was allegedly involved in extortion activities in the region. He is also wanted in Longding Police Station Case No. 43/2022, registered under Sections 302/34 of the IPC, Sections 25(1A)/27 of the Arms Act, and Sections 10/13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), in connection with the murder of Lt. Attar Sharma.
“We have arrested an active cadre of NSCN(K-Angmai) and registered Case No. 4/2026 under Sections 25(1A)/27 of the Arms Act read with Sections 10/13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The case has been taken up for investigation,” a police official said.
Police sources said Wangsa reportedly joined the outfit in 2012.
NSCN(K-Angmai), officially known as the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (Ang Mai faction), is a Naga insurgent group operating in the India-Myanmar border region. The faction split from NSCN(K-Yung Aung) in July 2023 after civil and military leaders removed Yung Aung and elected retired Major General Ang Mai as its chairman.
Earlier this month, another NSCN(K-Angmai) cadre was arrested during a joint operation by the Assam Rifles and Arunachal Pradesh Police in Tirap district.
The arrested cadre was identified as Longsom Losu alias Gangsa (32), a resident of Tirap district. Acting on specific intelligence inputs about the movement of an insurgent, security forces launched an operation that led to his apprehension.
A 7.65 mm pistol, one magazine, 10 live rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition and a bag were recovered from his possession.
Security forces have intensified operations against insurgent groups operating in eastern Arunachal Pradesh and are continuing efforts to curb militant activities in the region.

The Tirap, Longding and Changlang (TLC) districts remain vulnerable to insurgent activity due to their proximity to the Myanmar border, where several Northeast insurgent groups maintain camps.
“It is relatively easy for insurgents to carry out activities in the TLC region and retreat through forest routes to their camps in Myanmar. Security forces are taking all possible measures to curb such activities. Recently, several cadres of various insurgent groups have surrendered and returned to the mainstream,” an official said.
