Dibrugarh: In a joint operation conducted by Longding Police in collaboration with 24 Assam Rifles (AR) and ECIB Longding, an Over Ground Worker (OGW) cadre of ULFA-I was apprehended from Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district on Wednesday.
The individual has been identified as Dhoroni Mech alias Bashanta Asom (26) of Kutuha under Barbaruah Police Station in Dibrugarh district.
The arrest was made at Hotel Taham, located in the Labour Shed Colony, Longding.
The individual was brought to Longding Police Station for initial interrogation. During the operation, several items were recovered from his possession, including ATM cards, a Voter ID, a PAN card, a mobile handset, and SIM cards.
Longding Superintendent of Police Dekio Gunja informed that the individual has now been handed over to Charaideo district police, Assam, for further investigation.
“The OGW has been working for ULFA-I for a long time. He has been involved in extortion-related activities and has been helping the proscribed organisation in its activities,” said a source.
Recently, seven suspected Over Ground Workers (OGWs) linked to ULFA (Independent) were arrested from various locations in Tinsukia district of Assam and adjoining areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Berlin Neog from Bordumsa, Mithu Gohain and Lilambar Moran from Pengeri, Bikash Deka from Kakopathar, Shiva Dev and Paritosh Dev from Miao in Arunachal Pradesh, and Manab Dey from Makum.
According to sources, all seven suspects are believed to be associated with ULFA (I) and are under suspicion for their involvement in extortion activities and for facilitating the transfer of sensitive information.
Meanwhile, security forces have launched massive operations against the proscribed groups.
