In the early hours of October 21, a quiet revolution took place in the remote mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. While most people carried on with their day, a small drone whirred to life in the skies above Chowkham Post Office, signaling the dawn of a new era in India’s postal history.
This wasn’t just any ordinary flight—it was a mission of the future. The Department of Posts, in partnership with SKYE AIR Mobility Private Limited, embarked on a bold proof of concept (POC) to deliver mail between the Chowkham Post Office in the Namsai district and the Wakro Branch Post Office in the neighboring Lohit district. These two locations, separated by dense forests and rugged mountains, often saw mail delivery times through a bus which takes two hours or more due to the difficult terrain.

But not anymore.
At exactly 10:40 AM, a drone loaded with vital mail packages took off from Chowkham. It glided swiftly, cutting through the clouds, navigating effortlessly over the undulating landscape that normally took buses hours to traverse. Within just 22 minutes, it had arrived at its destination—the Wakro Branch Post Office. A journey that once felt laborious now seemed as light as the air itself. By 11:02 AM, the drone had landed, marking the first-ever successful mail delivery by air in the region.
On its return journey, the drone airlifted from Wakro at 11:44 AM, once again slicing through the sky, and arrived back in Chowkham at 12:08 PM. A round trip of 90 kilometers across a region where towering mountains and deep valleys stretch as far as the eye can see was completed in less than half the time it would have taken a traditional vehicle.
The Department of Posts’ ambitious project demonstrated that terrain obstacles could be conquered, ensuring that mail services in the country’s most difficult regions could be reliable, fast, and traceable in real time.
Residents who once waited days for important documents, letters from loved ones, or critical government notices now saw the potential of their remote location becoming part of the fast-moving modern world.
Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region said the initiative along with a reduction in transmission time, will also foster reliability through real-time tracking and increased efficiency of mail deliverance systems.
“A big step towards faster, reliable, and eco-friendly mail delivery in India’s remote areas,” he said.
