In a remarkable achievement, Government Secondary Schools in Gautampur and Dumpather, both under Diyun Circle in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh, have witnessed an extraordinary surge in pass rates in the CBSE Class X exams for 2024. From struggling with pass rates as low as 6% in previous years, these schools have achieved their highest-ever results, marking a significant improvement in students’ performance.
The recently declared results unveiled a pass percentage of 58% for Government Secondary School, Gautampur, and 52% for Government Secondary School, Dumpather. These figures represent a stark departure from the dismal pass rates of just 6.4% and 6.9% respectively in the preceding year.
The journey from such abysmally low pass rates to the current success was not without its challenges. Students at these schools grappled with low learning levels, significant learning gaps, and deficiencies in English proficiency and core subject knowledge. However, with concerted efforts and the implementation of the CBSE Exam Board Support Program by the District Administration, Changlang District, these schools have achieved a remarkable turnaround.
Under the leadership of Sunny Singh, former District Commissioner of Changlang, and Tage Kakki, District Deputy Director of School Education, along with the NGO partner India Foundation for Education Transformation (IFET), a comprehensive support program was initiated. This program, conducted from August 2023 to March 2024, included after-school remedial classes, regular assessments, mock papers, peer teaching, parental engagement, and incentivization of students’ efforts.
As the board exams approached, a residential setup was provided to ensure focused preparation, with separate accommodations for boys and girls. This initiative not only provided academic assistance but also ensured pastoral care and supervision during the crucial exam period.
The success of this endeavor is evident in the words of the students themselves. Rohit Chakma, the topper at GSS Gautampur, expressed gratitude for the support received, highlighting the impact of after-school remedial classes and residential accommodations. Gowry Sharma, another successful candidate, credited the extra tuition classes and the motivating environment provided during the residential stay for her success.

Reflecting on the achievement, Asgar Ali, the Headmaster of Government Secondary School, Gautampur, emphasized the importance of continuous academic drilling and monitoring. The collaborative efforts of the school, district administration, NGO partners, and even local authorities and the Army, who provided ration support, were instrumental in this success story.
Sunny Singh, the former District Commissioner, expressed his delight at the results, envisioning a potential overall pass percentage exceeding 96% if students clear their compartment exams.
