Agartala: Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, M. Riaz Hamidullah, on Sunday concluded his three-day visit to Tripura on Sunday to depart for New Delhi, officials said.
During his three-day state tour, the Bangladesh envoy conducted a series of high-level engagements focused on bilateral infrastructure projects.
Hamidullah, who arrived in Agartala on Friday, met with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on a courtesy call. Sources privy to as to what transpired in the meeting said that he had been here to review the status of several key initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity between India’s Northeast and Bangladesh.
The High Commissioner’s itinerary included inspections of the Agartala-Akhaura railway link, the Maitri Setu over the Feni River, and the Integrated Check Post at Sabroom in South Tripura district. These projects are already complete and awaiting formal inauguration to start operations. On the other hand, the inland waterway development is nearing completion.
Sources indicated that the formal inauguration of these projects, which was previously delayed, has been impacted by recent political instability in Bangladesh.
The envoy’s visit is being seen as a positive step towards revitalizing diplomatic relations and ensuring the timely completion of these collaborative ventures.
Before his departure from Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport, Hamidullah paid a courtesy visit to Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu at Raj Bhavan. He was accompanied by Arif Muhammad, Assistant High Commissioner of the Bangladesh mission in Agartala.
The envoy, who maintained a low profile during his visit, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the infrastructure works when briefly approached by reporters.
Tripura, which shares an 856-kilometre border with Bangladesh, is poised to become a key trade and transit hub for the Northeast region once these connectivity projects become operational. The interim government in Bangladesh had recently sent a consignment of mangoes as a goodwill gesture to Chief Minister Saha.
