Agartala: An FIR was filed against 18 senior students of Tripura Medical College and Dr. BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital for their alleged involvement in ragging, police confirmed on Monday.

Speaking to EastMojo, SDPO Amtali Sankar Chandra Das said, “We have registered an FIR with the Amtali police station and initiated an investigation. The FIR was lodged by the Principal of the Medical College. The matter is being thoroughly investigated, and those accused in the case will soon be called for inquiry. However, we do not intend to disrupt preparations for the upcoming exams.”

According to Das, the ‘ragging culture’ within the college came to light after an anonymous complaint was submitted to the National Medical Commission (NMC). “WhatsApp chats were included with the complaint as evidence. In those chats, the accused senior students were seen threatening juniors, especially freshmen, and pressuring them to meet certain unreasonable expectations. This evidence is currently under verification,” Das explained.

A senior official associated with the management of the private medical college disclosed that the FIR was filed on Saturday after comprehensive discussions in specific forums. The parents of the accused students were summoned, and penalties were also imposed on them.

“The offending students have been suspended from the college hostel, and a cash penalty of Rs 10 lakh has been imposed for their misconduct,” he added, noting that the contents of the WhatsApp chats were highly objectionable.

The official further shared that the NMC examined the anonymous complaint and involved the Society Against Violence in Education (SAVE) in the investigation. “The matter was subsequently referred to the College Principal, who was instructed to file an FIR. He discussed the case with the college’s internal anti-ragging committee before filing the FIR. The college has also imposed further penalties on the involved students,” the source stated.
