Agartala: CPIM Politburo member and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar launched a sharp critique of the BJP-led Tripura government on Wednesday, claiming that ‘corruption’ and the ‘Tripura BJP’ have become synonymous.
Sarkar alleged that while a government may exist in Tripura, “governance is nowhere to be found.”
“You call this a government? Seven years have passed since the BJP took office, and the law and order situation has hit rock bottom. Atrocities against women and children are rising, yet the Chief Minister seems unaffected by these developments. He has made no statements addressing his administration’s failures. I have no personal grudge against him, but what is the government actually doing?” the former Chief Minister remarked.
Sarkar also stressed that no party remains in power forever. “The BJP is doing everything it can to impose a party fascist rule in Tripura. From Panchayat to Lok Sabha, their candidates win through false voting and electoral malpractices. The oppression of the masses by BJP Mandal leaders has reached alarming levels.”
Backing Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, who recently leveled corruption charges against senior BJP leaders, Sarkar added, “An opposition MLA in the state assembly has accused an official from the Chief Minister’s office of corruption, with allegations of a ‘4 to 6 percent’ kickback associated with him. How much longer must the people of Tripura endure this misrule?”
Sarkar also questioned the state’s flood relief measures and raised concerns about rising communal tensions. “To divert attention from pressing issues, the BJP and its ideological head, the RSS, are stoking divisions between communities that have coexisted peacefully for years. Be it between tribals and non-tribals or Hindus and religious minorities, tensions are being deliberately fueled. Why else are only idols of Goddess Kali being vandalized across the state?” Sarkar claimed.
Sarkar made these remarks at a memorial meeting held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan to honor the late CPIM leader Sitaram Yechury. Speaking at the event, CPIM Politburo member Prakash Karat reflected on his long political journey alongside Yechury.
