Agartala: Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma announced on Tuesday that the state government will conduct a study to identify the major factors contributing to the recent floods that devastated the entire state.
Speaking to media persons during a relief distribution event at Poangbari block in South Tripura District, Debbarma emphasised that the government is taking the issue very seriously.
“There will be questions in the state assembly from both the treasury and opposition benches regarding why this level of devastation occurred this year in Tripura after so many years. When the floods began, I consulted with experts, and they believe that the floods may have been caused by changes in Tripura’s climatic conditions. The drying up of catchment areas due to deforestation has prevented rainwater from being absorbed,” Debbarma explained.
The Minister also mentioned that his department is planning to carry out a study in collaboration with the central government. “My department and I are very serious about this matter. It will be thoroughly studied, and the issue will also be raised with the central government,” he added.
A delegation of Tipra Motha legislators, led by Debbarma, visited several areas under the Poangbari RD Block in South Tripura for an on-site inspection and to distribute relief provided by the Forest Department.
“These floods have caused widespread devastation across the state. Here in Poangbari, at least 44 families have been left homeless, with 17 families currently sheltered in a relief camp since the floods hit. Electricity services remain paralyzed, and road restoration work is still ongoing. All relevant department officers are on-site, and I have instructed them to complete the work as soon as possible. I have also urged officials to ensure that each affected family is properly surveyed,” Debbarma stated.
