NFR ensures passenger safety, offers aide to flood-affected in Tripura

Amid the persistent inclement weather and ongoing heavy rainfall in Tripura, the alertness and quick actions of N.F. Railway staff have been crucial in ensuring passenger safety. On 21 August 2024, Loco Pilot R. N. Kumar and Assistant Loco Pilot Surajit Debnath averted a potential disaster while operating train 05676 UP Dharmanagar – Agartala Passenger Special. The train, carrying approximately 1,000 passengers, was passing through the Baramura hill ranges when the crew noticed an obstruction on the track at around 10:10 AM, near KM 149/02, approximately 33 km from Agartala.

Upon spotting the blockage, consisting of a large landslide that had deposited mud and trees onto the track, the loco pilots immediately applied the emergency brake, halting the train around 100 metres before the debris. Their swift actions prevented a potential mishap. Despite the heavy rainfall, the crew promptly informed their superiors of the situation.

In a similar incident today, train number 13174 Kanchanjungha Express was safely controlled at KM 146/8 after receiving information about a fallen tree obstructing the railway track between Teliamura and Jirania stations.

The floods have displaced residents in several areas of Tripura, many of whom have sought refuge at nearby railway stations. Stations such as Udaipur have become safe havens for those affected by the deluge. The N.F. Railway authorities have made provisions for essential assistance at these stations, including access to waiting rooms, toilets, and 24/7 drinking water facilities. The railway authorities remain committed to supporting the flood-affected residents taking shelter at the stations until the situation stabilises.

Given the landslides occurring near the tracks, N.F. Railway is exercising extreme caution in train operations. Trains are being monitored closely and are running under speed restrictions to prevent any accidents. Loco pilots, guards, and trackmen have been alerted to remain vigilant for any disturbances along the tracks. N.F. Railway reiterates its commitment to assisting people in any circumstances, including natural disasters.
