Agartala: Unaccounted cash worth Rs 77 lakh was seized from West Bengal-bound Kanchanjunga Express in two separate incidents in the last couple of days.
The first recovery was made on February 14 from Dharmanagar railway station in North Tripura district and the second seizure was made on Saturday.
As many as three Maharashtra citizens were detained due to the cash seizure.
On Saturday, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) launched a joint search operation at Agartala railway station.
During the routine searches, three persons were detained for their suspicious movement.
“When searched properly, we have seized cash worth Rs 9 lakh 56 thousand from their possession. They could not provide any valid source of the money. Accordingly, they had been detained,” an on-duty police officer has said.
The accused persons are identified as Sudhir Wangmo, Krishna Wangmo, and Seema Shinde. All of them are residents of Maharashtra.
“During preliminary interrogation, they disclosed that they arrived at Tripura three days back. They were on their way back to Maharashtra via West Bengal,” the police officer added. The case would be transferred to the Income Tax department.

On February 14, GRP officials confiscated Rs 66.57 lakh unclaimed cash from the same express train. “The stash of cash wrapped in paper was lying on the train’s surface near the lavatory of the B1 compartment.
The officials spoke to the passengers, but no one knew how the money came here,” GRP officer Dhananjay Barman told media persons. The cash comprised Rs 500 and Rs 200 notes.
