Boko: In a tragic incident, a man lost his life at the Aradonga picnic area under Athiabari Police Outpost in Meghalaya, near the Assam-Meghalaya border, on Monday. Local residents discovered the body and promptly informed the police.
Athiabari Police Outpost in-charge, Samuel Sangma, immediately reached the scene, recovered the body, and sent it to Riangdo in the West Khasi Hills District for a post-mortem examination. According to Sangma, the deceased had gone to the stream, lost his balance, and slipped, resulting in his death.
As winter begins, Assam enters its beloved picnic season, which runs from December to mid-February. People flock to natural spots to celebrate picnics. However, despite strict rules and regulations imposed by the police and administration, accidents during the picnic season are common, often leading to injuries or fatalities.
Meanwhile, Assam’s Hahim Police Outpost in-charge, Lakhi Nandan Boro, also visited the site to verify the incident. Boro reported that a group of approximately 60 people from Adabari, Guwahati, had traveled to the Aradonga picnic spot in two buses. The deceased was identified as Gautam Ganguly, around 56 years old, from Hatat Colony, Rest Camp, in Pandu, Guwahati.
According to Ganguly’s colleagues, the group worked at a departmental store in Adabari. They had come to Aradonga to celebrate a picnic with the store owner. Upon reaching the spot, Ganguly wandered off while others were busy preparing food. Shortly after, local residents informed the group about a body found in the stream, which was later identified as Ganguly.
Aradonga village, located in the West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya, lies adjacent to Hahim in Assam’s Kamrup District. Surrounded by trees, mountains, rivers, and streams, the picturesque village attracts thousands of people from Assam every year during the picnic season. The stream near Aradonga flows into Assam and eventually connects with the Singra River, a tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra.
