Melbourne, Australia – In a major shake-up for Team India, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced today that Mumbai off-spinning all-rounder Tanush Kotian has received his maiden Test call-up for the remaining two matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The 26-year-old replaces veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who retired after an illustrious career featuring over 500 Test wickets following the third Test in Brisbane.
Kotian’s selection comes as a surprise, with many experts expecting a recall for Kuldeep Yadav or a debut for Yuzvendra Chahal. However, the selectors have opted for Kotian’s off-spin variations and handy lower-order batting, believing he can provide a balanced option for the team.
A BCCI official stated, “Tanush Kotian has shown immense promise in domestic cricket. His recent performances in first-class matches and adaptability during India A’s tour of Australia made him a frontrunner for this spot. We believe he can complement the bowling attack and provide the control required in the longer format.”
Kotian has been a standout performer in domestic tournaments, particularly in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His recent stint with the India A squad during their tour of Australia further bolstered his case, ensuring a smooth transition to the senior team.
Kotian can solidify his place in the squad with this call-up. He’ll join the team in Melbourne before the Boxing Day Test on December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. With India trailing in the series, this match is crucial for keeping their series hopes alive. The Sydney Cricket Ground will host the final Test from January 3, 2025, giving Kotian two matches to display his skill.
