Mirabai Chanu sets sights on 90kg snatch lift at Paris Olympics

Tokyo Olympics silver medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who has recently returned to competition after a six-month injury break, is setting her sights on the upcoming Paris Games. Chanu, recovering from hip tendonitis that saw her miss out on a medal in the last Asian Games, marked her return with a solid performance at the Phuket World Cup in April, lifting a total of 184kg (81kg snatch and 103kg clean and jerk).

Looking ahead to Paris, Chanu is aiming for a snatch lift exceeding 90kg, underscoring her ambition for a competitive edge. She acknowledges the necessity of achieving a total lift surpassing 200kg to contend for a medal, a goal she pursues diligently under the guidance of her long-time coach Vijay Kumar Sharma.

Reflecting on her recovery journey, Chanu expressed gratitude for the learning experience the injury phase provided. “I’ve learned to prioritize safety, adhere to coach instructions, and maintain proper techniques and rest,” she noted during a virtual interaction organized by the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

Despite the challenges posed by injury setbacks, Chanu remains resilient, focusing on her preparations at NNIS, Patiala, before departing for Paris on July 7. “I am aware of the pressure, especially after clinching India’s first medal in Tokyo. My aim is to deliver my best performance and bring home another medal for my country,” Chanu affirmed.
