Gangtok: Sikkim has sent a 35-member team comprising doctors and volunteers to disaster-hit Nepal with relief materials to assess the situation on the ground and provide immediate humanitarian assistance.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay said the team would assess the requirements in the affected areas before the state decides on further assistance.
“We have sent a team of 35 members today. They will go there, assess the situation on the ground and understand what is required. Based on their assessment, we will provide further assistance,” Golay said.
He said medicines were among the most urgent requirements identified by the state, along with other essential supplies.
“At present, medicines are among the most important requirements. There is also a need for other essential materials,” he said.
Golay said Sikkim’s decision to assist Nepal was influenced by the state’s own experience of the devastating South Lhonak glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in 2023, which caused extensive loss of life and damage to infrastructure.
He recalled that Sikkim had received assistance and goodwill from across the region, including Nepal, following the disaster.
“When the disaster occurred in Sikkim in 2023, there was extensive loss and damage. At that time, Sikkim received a great deal of assistance from the Government of India and also from Nepal and other places,” he said.
Recalling the support and prayers extended by people in Nepal, Golay said Sikkim’s response was rooted in humanitarian solidarity.
“Whether we received material assistance or not, we received prayers and blessings from people everywhere, including Nepal,” he said.
“Keeping this in mind, and as a humanitarian gesture, we want to help Nepal and extend a hand of cooperation. That is our objective,” Golay added.
