Gangtok: The Sikkim government has renewed its call for reliable air connectivity and a long-term expansion of Pakyong Airport, which has faced frequent disruptions since its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2018.
“SpiceJet could not provide consistent service, and flights lasted less than 300 days. We have rejected their continuation. Instead, we have requested Air India Express to operate Bombardier Q400 flights, along with additional helicopter services to strengthen regional access,” said C.S. Rao, Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism and Civil Aviation Department.
The issue was also taken up during the Civil Aviation Summit in Itanagar on September 4, attended by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, state tourism ministers, and private operators. Rao said the minister has assured support to address the concerns.
Highlighting the state’s vision, Rao noted that Pakyong’s current 1.75 km runway restricts the type of aircraft that can operate. “Extending it to 2.75 km will allow us to handle Airbus and Boeing aircraft. At 4,300 feet altitude, this will be a game-changer for Sikkim’s connectivity,” he said.
