Gangtok: Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba has raised concerns over the worsening road connectivity between Sikkim and West Bengal, particularly along National Highway 10, which frequently suffers damage. Subba has been consistently urging the central government to transfer control of NH-10 to the Centre since the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha government assumed its second term.
During a recent budget session in Delhi, Subba reported that Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari assured him of the impending transfer of NH-10 to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). Officials from both the Ministry and NHIDCL were present during the discussions. “NH-10 is highly vulnerable in many sections, and we are seeking a permanent solution,” Subba stated.
Subba also highlighted the challenges faced by local residents due to last year’s Glacial Lake Outburst Flooding (GLOF) and rising water levels in the Teesta basin.
Construction work is expected to begin with the onset of the dry season, especially in sensitive areas like Naga in North Sikkim.
He emphasized the need for the Defence Ministry to address road conditions in the context of national security and support communities residing along the border.
Subba also commented on the pending budgetary allocations promised by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, which have not been disbursed despite the submission of a Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) report. “We are waiting for action from the Finance Ministry. They are aware of the significant losses the state has incurred,” he said, expressing confidence in the government’s recognition of the issue.
