Gangtok: Losar festival, marking the Buddhist new year of the male wood dragon began in Sikkim with the consecration ceremony of Endum Chorten at Enchey Monastery. Enchey is among the most revered monasteries in Sikkim, located a few kilometers above Gangtok town.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay attended the consecration ceremony along with Kyabje Tinkey Gonjang Rinpoche who consecrated the Endum Chorten – Stupa of reconciliation at Enchey monastery.
Endum Chorten is one of the Eight Great Stupas, symbolizing a pivotal moment in Sangha history. It commemorates the Buddha’s successful reconciliation of disputing factions within the Sangha, resolving the enmity instigated by Devadatta.
This stupa, at Enchey Monastery, characterized by four octagonal steps, stands as a profound monument with various symbolic meanings which are given for the four levels of eight-sided steps, totalling thirty-two in number.
