Agartala: The long wait is finally over. Putting months of speculation to rest, the BJP high command on Thursday appointed 44-year-old Abhishek Debroy as the new president of the party’s Tripura unit — a decision that had been pending since August 2025.
A first-time MLA from the Matabari Assembly constituency in Gomati district, Abhishek Debroy’s appointment is significant on several counts.
For the first time in more than eight years of BJP rule in Tripura, the party has elevated a leader from a district-level organisational background to head the state unit. Debroy previously served as the BJP’s Gomati district president and was later inducted into the party’s state committee.
His rise through the ranks has been gradual but steady.
Abhishek Debroy began his political career with the Congress before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2017, at a time when the saffron party was rapidly expanding its base in Tripura. He went on to hold several responsibilities within the BJP’s youth wing and also entered electoral politics through local body polls.
In the 2023 Assembly elections, the BJP fielded him from the politically significant Matabari constituency, replacing former MLA Biplab Kumar Ghosh. Debroy went on to win the seat and emerged as one of the younger faces in the party’s legislative ranks.
His public profile grew further during the devastating floods of 2024, when his relief efforts and outreach among affected families drew attention across Gomati district.
According to party insiders, Debroy enjoys considerable influence among younger workers and supporters — a quality the BJP leadership appears keen to harness as it prepares for future electoral battles.
Still, whether he will be able to meet the expectations of leading the party organisation at the state level remains to be seen.
The BJP had been searching for a new state president since August 2025, when outgoing chief Rajib Bhattacharjee completed his tenure and was subsequently elected to the Rajya Sabha.
The appointment process was delayed for months due to internal consultations and competing considerations within the party. The eventual selection of Debroy came as a surprise to many, particularly among sections of the BJP leadership based in Agartala.
However, celebrations reportedly broke out in parts of Gomati district soon after the announcement.
Political observers say the appointment reflects the BJP leadership’s intention to reward Gomati district, where the party performed strongly in recent elections, while also signalling that organisational merit may matter more than political geography.
Soon after the announcement, senior BJP leaders congratulated Debroy on his elevation.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha wrote on social media: “Heartiest congratulations to Shri Abhishek Debroy Ji on being appointed as the President of BJP Tripura Pradesh. Confident that under his dynamic leadership and organisational vision, the party will grow stronger and continue working dedicatedly for the welfare of Tripura’s people.”
In a telephonic interview with a television channel, Debroy thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Chief Minister Manik Saha and other senior leaders for entrusting him with the responsibility.
“I will definitely work tirelessly to further strengthen our party organisation. We have thousands of workers at the grassroots level. We have booth-level workers who toil hard for the party. I will try to build a robust organisation capable of withstanding any challenge,” he said.
Asked about the upcoming Assembly elections, which would be fought under his leadership, Debroy remained cautious.
“It is very early to make any comments on that,” he said.
Debroy is a graduate in pharmaceutical science.
