Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), regarded as Mizoram’s apex student body, has issued a public advisory amid a growing influx of tourists, visitors and digital content creators into Mizoram whose actions have raised concerns over respect and cultural sensitivity.
The move comes in the wake of a recent controversy involving a travel vlogger who allegedly objectified Mizo women in a series of Instagram posts. The content triggered widespread anger across the state, with popular social media pages condemning the posts. One widely circulated response read, “Our women are not your props.”
While reiterating that Mizoram continues to welcome visitors with warmth and hospitality, MZP emphasised that such openness must not be misused.
The organisation stated that tourism is encouraged, but any form of disrespect or exploitation of Mizo society, culture, women or religious institutions will not be tolerated.
MZP also reminded visitors that entry into Mizoram is regulated under the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system.
All non-residents are required to possess a valid permit and adhere to local laws, regulations and community norms during their stay.
It clarified that a temporary ILP permits entry only and does not authorise individuals to engage in employment or business activities.
Expressing concern over emerging trends in digital content creation, the student body urged vloggers, YouTubers and other creators to act responsibly.
It cautioned against recording or sharing content that misrepresents or disrespects Mizo culture, religion or people, and advised against filming individuals, homes, churches or community settings without prior consent.
It also warned against producing sensational or misleading content for online engagement and strongly objected to the objectification of Mizo women and girls. Those seeking to understand Mizo culture were encouraged to approach community elders rather than engaging in inappropriate interactions.
Further, MZP called on all visitors to respect local customs, traditions and social values, maintain proper conduct in public spaces, and show full respect towards women and girls, with zero tolerance for misconduct.
Visitors were urged to treat churches and religious places with reverence and to respect all forms of livelihood, including taxi drivers, two-wheeler taxi operators and other service providers.
Noting that Mizos are widely known for their hospitality and warmth, MZP cautioned that this should not be mistaken for passivity or tolerance of inappropriate behaviour.
It warned that any act of disrespect towards Mizo culture, women, religious institutions or individuals would be taken seriously and could invite community response as well as legal action.
