Indian Railways has approved six new railway line projects under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), aimed at improving rail connectivity in North Bengal and the Northeast. The approval by the Railway Board allows the projects to move into the execution phase.
The sanctioned projects include the Raiganj–Itahar (22.16 km) and Gazole–Itahar (27.20 km) new lines, estimated to cost Rs 129.34 crore and Rs 85.59 crore, respectively. These lines are expected to improve rail access in the northern and southern parts of Dinajpur district and support passenger and freight movement towards the Northeast.
Another project approved is the Itahar–Buniadpur new line, spanning 27.095 km at an estimated cost of Rs 287.94 crore. The line will connect several trade and population centres through five stations, improving access for rural and semi-urban areas.
The Railway Board has also cleared the Chalsa–Naxal new line, covering 19.85 km, with an estimated cost of Rs 292.92 crore. This project is intended to strengthen connectivity in the Dooars region and expand the existing railway network.
In addition, the Rajabhatkhawa–Jainti new line, measuring 15.13 km and estimated at Rs 180.16 crore, has been approved. The alignment passes through the Buxa Tiger Reserve and is planned with an emphasis on sustainable and environmentally responsible construction practices.
The sixth project, the Raiganj–Dalkhola new line, will cover 43.43 km and is estimated to cost Rs 291.53 crore. With substantial preliminary work already completed, the line is expected to provide a more direct rail link between Raiganj and Dalkhola, reducing travel time and supporting both passenger and freight movement.
With the approval of these six projects, Northeast Frontier Railway will oversee further expansion of railway infrastructure in parts of West Bengal and the Northeast, as part of Indian Railways’ wider network development plans.
