Guwahati: The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region has sanctioned 90 projects worth Rs 3417.68 crore under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme from 2021-22 to 2023-24 and and in the current financial year 2024-25.
These projects, aimed at bolstering infrastructure in the Northeast region, are being executed by the respective State Governments. The MDoNER plays an active role in overseeing their progress through various measures, including Field Level Technical Support Units (FTSUs): Established in all eight Northeastern states, these units conduct regular inspections and monitoring of ongoing projects; Project Quality Monitors/ Third Party Technical Inspection (PQM/TPTI) Agencies: Recently engaged by the MDoNER, these agencies provide additional monitoring support.
The MDoNER supports the infrastructure development efforts of Northeastern states through various other schemes as well. These include the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE) Scheme, Special Development Packages, and Schemes of NEC.
54 non-exempted Ministries are mandated to allocate 10% of their Gross Budgetary Support to projects in the North Eastern Region.
The Government of India has also undertaken several initiatives to improve basic infrastructure and connectivity in the Northeast, including the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for North East, Broad Gauging of Railway lines & Capital Connectivity Rail Projects, Comprehensive Telecom Development Programme, and Schemes for Strengthening of Transmission and Distribution systems.
