Rs 10,369 crore budget allocated for Northeast rail infrastructure

Guwahati: The interim Budget for 2024-25 has earmarked Rs. 10,369 crore for the enhancement of railway infrastructure in the Northeast and Assam.

As part of this initiative, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) will see 60 stations in the region redeveloped with world-class amenities. Among these, Fakiragram railway station in Assam is set for a major upgrade with an investment of Rs. 34.60 crores.

Located in Kokrajhar district, Fakiragram station lies on the New Jalpaiguri–New Bongaigaon section under the Alipurduar Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). The planned improvements include an extension of the existing station building with an enhanced facade. New facilities will include retiring rooms and a waiting room equipped with modern amenities to cater to passenger needs.

Accessibility will be a key focus, with ramps and toilet facilities for Divyangjan, as well as the installation of lifts and a 5-metre-wide foot overbridge. Separate toilet blocks for male and female passengers, improved parking facilities, and beautification of the circulating area are also part of the redevelopment plans. The platforms will be resurfaced with marble stone and tiles, and shelters will be provided to ensure passenger comfort. Additionally, an upgraded entry and exit path will enhance accessibility.

Tenders for these works have already been awarded, and foundation work for the new station building has commenced. Other passenger amenities, such as the installation of Coach Guidance Boards, a Train Information Display System, platform extensions, and accessible water booths for Divyangjan, are also in progress.

The redevelopment of Fakiragram station is expected to open new avenues for employment and business opportunities, boost tourism, and enhance travel convenience for passengers from the city and surrounding areas.
