The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Assam-Meghalaya for the next two days. Following this period, the region will experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall.
In stark contrast, North India is likely to continue facing heat wave to severe heatwave conditions over the next 24 hours. Relief is expected as a Western Disturbance approaches Northwest India, which should gradually abate the heatwave conditions.
During the past 24 hours, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions prevailed in most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Similar conditions were observed in some areas of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and northern Madhya Pradesh. Isolated pockets in northeastern Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Jharkhand also experienced severe heat.
Temperatures in the plains of North India ranged from 44°C to 46°C, significantly above the normal range by 5-8°C. The highest recorded temperature was 47.6°C in Prayagraj, East Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, isolated exceptionally heavy rainfall was recorded in Meghalaya, with heavy to very heavy rainfall occurring in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Bihar. Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana, South Interior Karnataka, and Rayalaseema also reported heavy rainfall in isolated places.
The Southwest Monsoon continues to progress, currently extending through Navsari, Jalgaon, Amravati, Chandrapur, Bijapur, Sukma, Malkangiri, Vizianagaram, and Islampur. Conditions are favourable for the monsoon’s further advance into parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the Northwest Bay of Bengal. It is also expected to cover more areas of Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand over the next 3-4 days.
A cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam, combined with strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, will influence the weather over Northeast India. Expect widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal in the next five days.
Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh until 21 June. Additionally, Meghalaya is expected to experience exceptionally heavy rainfall on 18 June.
Over the next five days, scattered to widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, is likely across Gujarat, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.
Northwest India will see no significant change in maximum temperatures for the next 24 hours, followed by a 2°C drop over the subsequent two days before rising again. East and Central India will experience a decrease in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C over the next few days.

Severe heat wave conditions are expected in many parts of Uttar Pradesh on 18 and 19 June, with some areas continuing to experience high temperatures on 20 June. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, and Bihar will also see heatwave conditions on 18 June, with intensity decreasing thereafter. Isolated heatwave conditions are predicted for Jammu-Kashmir, North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, North Madhya Pradesh, and North Rajasthan.
Warm night conditions will prevail in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on 18 and 19 June, while hot and humid weather is expected in Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Bihar.
