Aizawl: Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMC&H) has become the largest hospital in Mizoram, with its bed capacity increasing to 517 following infrastructure expansion and restoration work carried out over the past two years.
The development was reviewed during a Governing Body meeting held on Tuesday at the Chief Minister’s Conference Hall under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
The meeting was attended by School Education Minister Dr Vanlalthlana, Health and Family Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii, MLA Baryl Vanneihsangi and other members of the Governing Body.
Members discussed a range of issues related to the strengthening of the state’s premier medical institution, including infrastructure development, academic expansion and healthcare services.
One of the key concerns raised during the meeting was the shortage of manpower in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Members noted that the department currently has only one doctor who is handling both clinical and teaching responsibilities and stressed the need for immediate expansion of the department.
The Governing Body also reviewed the progress of the Critical Care Block being constructed through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding. Procurement of equipment for the facility is expected to begin shortly, and discussions focused on ensuring its effective utilisation once operational.
Several proposals for upgrading and strengthening the institution under MPLAN were also examined. Since all projects cannot be implemented simultaneously, the Governing Body prepared a priority list for phased execution.
Officials informed the meeting that ZMC&H has added 30 new cabins and 13 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds over the past two years. In addition, several previously non-functional hospital beds have been repaired and brought back into service, increasing the hospital’s overall capacity to 517 beds.
The meeting also reviewed the academic progress of the medical college. Ten new postgraduate seats were introduced in October 2024, and nine students are currently enrolled in the programme.
Members were also informed that the institution’s third batch of MBBS students has successfully completed the course, marking another milestone in the college’s growth as a leading medical education and healthcare institution in the state.
