Kohima: Clashes between rival political supporters in Longkhum and Mangmetong villages under Mokokchung district left one person dead and several others arrested, prompting authorities in Nagaland to cancel permissions for setting up temporary party offices ahead of the April 9 Koridang by-election amid rising law-and-order concerns.
In Longkhum, clashes reported broke out at around 11 pm on April 5 in Longkhum village between supporters of BJP candidate Daochier I. Imchen and Independent candidate Major Toshikaba (Retd), reportedly involving stone-pelting between rival political camps located in close proximity.
Three individuals had sustained injuries during the clash and had sought treatment at Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital (IMDH).
A second clash was reported at around 5 am at the same location. Police launched a search operation and 16 individuals who were reportedly hiding in nearby jungle areas were apprehended.
Meanwhile, Imrongsungba Imchen (38), who had sustained injuries during the earlier clash, later succumbed to his injuries.
An FIR registered on April 6 in connection with the earlier incident of causing injury would now be converted into a murder case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
In a separate incident in Mangmetong, several vehicles and houses were vandalised. Police registered cases against those involved, naming 67 individuals in an FIR, and recovered cartridges and crude explosive boxes during search operations.
Police also informed that one BJP supporter, who was reportedly injured while attempting to flee, had been arrested in connection with the incident.

In view of the prevailing law and order situation, authorities in Mokokchung on April 6 cancelled all permissions granted for setting up temporary party offices under the 28 Koridang Assembly Constituency.
In an order issued later in the evening, the Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer stated that the directive superseded earlier permissions granted to contesting candidates across the constituency and directed all concerned to ensure immediate compliance in order to maintain peace and tranquillity ahead of the by-poll.
