Shillong: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has lodged a strong protest with the Meghalaya government over a recent instruction mandating the strict observance of the National Song at official government functions.

Nongrum met the Meghalaya Chief Secretary on Saturday and submitted a letter objecting to the government directive that calls for the playing or mass singing of the full-length version of Vande Mataram at official occasions across departments and offices under the Government of Meghalaya.

In his letter, the legislator pointed out that only two stanzas of Vande Mataram, written in Sanskrit by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, were adopted as the National Song by the Constituent Assembly in 1950.

Nongrum further noted that the Constitution of India does not explicitly mention a National Song, and therefore the recent instruction directing the full version to be played or sung at official functions raises an anomaly.

He urged the government to take cognisance of the issue and make appropriate corrections to the directive so that the song is played or sung only up to the two officially adopted stanzas and not beyond.

The North Shillong MLA requested the Chief Secretary to review the instruction and ensure that future observances at government functions remain in line with the historical decision taken by the Constituent Assembly.
