Changlang: In a concerted push to enhance the quality of foundational education in government schools, the Department of Education in Changlang district, in collaboration with the District Administration, concluded a six-day teacher training programme aimed at strengthening English and numeracy instruction across the Jairampur Sub-Division. Held from July 28 to August 2, the training was supported by Sunbird Trust and technically facilitated by the India Foundation for Educational Transformation (IFET), the district’s education partner.
Conducted block-wise in Jairampur, Nampong, and Manmao, the sessions were led by Block Resource Centre Coordinators (BRCCs) and Cluster Resource Centre Coordinators (CRCCs). One of the standout features of the programme was the inclusion of live demonstration classes with real students, allowing participating teachers to directly observe practical and effective teaching strategies.
The training content focused on equipping teachers with hands-on methods for teaching foundational literacy and numeracy. Core areas included speaking and listening in English, writing skills development, decoding and reading comprehension, and conceptual numeracy. All sessions were closely aligned with the textbooks currently in use across schools, as well as with NCERT-prescribed Learning Outcomes and the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This alignment was aimed at ensuring that training remained relevant to local classroom contexts and could be immediately applied by teachers.
Nearly 80 primary teachers representing approximately 50 schools participated in the training. The initiative represents a strong collaborative effort to improve classroom instruction at the most critical stage of a child’s learning journey.
Looking ahead, the Sunbird Trust has announced that it will host further residential training for government school teachers from Diyun Circle and Jairampur Sub-Division at its Teacher Training Academy in Mechuka. These sessions are scheduled for September and October 2025 and are expected to build on the foundational work initiated during the six-day programme.
In addition to these upcoming training opportunities, IFET has committed to supporting teachers throughout the year through the provision of ready-made lesson plans for reading, writing, and numeracy. The organization will also conduct regular school visits to offer in-class mentoring and academic support to ensure continuity in the training outcomes.
