Manipur: Former Rajya Sabha MP Behring passes away at 79

Imphal: BD Behring Anal, a former member of the Rajya Sabha and former MLA, passed away at the age of 79 years on Frinday after a prolonged illness.

According to sources, Behring, a veteran Naga politician from Chandel district, was undergoing treatment at Gangaram Hospital in Delhi and breathed his last at around 2:30 pm.

A native of Thorcham village under Chakpikarong subdivision in Chandel district, former MP Behring was first elected as an MLA from Chandel AC in 1990 on a Janata Dal ticket. The same year, in March, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha); however, he resigned before the end of his tenure.

Behring was also one of the founding members of the United Naga Council (UNC) and served as its general secretary, an apex body of the Naga community in Manipur. He was also an author of the book ‘Origin & Migration of Anals’.

Meanwhile, expressing shock and sadness over the demise, Chandel MLA SS Olish said that “I am deeply saddened by the passing of former MLA/MP Bd. Behring, who left for his heavenly abode at Gangaram Hospital, Delhi, after a prolonged illness.”

“He was a towering leader of the Nagas, especially in Chandel, whose contributions to peace, unity, and development are immeasurable. His demise leaves a void that will be difficult to fill,” she added, while extending her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
