The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Nagaland is poised to wrap up its four-month-long state-wide membership drive, launched on September 3, 2024, as part of the party’s organizational reshuffle under the national-level initiative, Sangathan Parv.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday at the BJP District Office in Dimapur, State BJP General Secretary Manai Konyak detailed the progress of the drive and outlined the timeline for the next steps in the party’s internal elections.
According to Konyak, elections for presidents and other office bearers have been successfully conducted in 53 of the 60 mandals (Assembly constituencies) in Nagaland. The focus now shifts to the district-level elections, which will commence with nominations for district presidents across the state’s 14 districts on Monday, January 6, 2025.
“We have received 42 applications for the 14 district president posts,” Konyak stated. The results for these posts are set to be announced on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
State BJP President Election
Following the conclusion of district-level elections, the spotlight will move to the election of the BJP state president, expected to take place on January 9 or 10, 2025. This stage marks a critical juncture in the Sangathan Parv, as the newly elected state president will also participate in the election for the national BJP president.
Konyak elaborated on the BJP’s criteria for the state president election, which involves 110 voters. However, the General Secretary added that the central BJP leadership has directed the state unit to prioritize selection over elections wherever feasible and where no disputes arise.
Broader Strategy in Nagaland
The membership drive, which has reached every district and Assembly constituency in the state, is part of the BJP’s broader strategy to consolidate its organizational structure in Nagaland. With internal elections nearing completion at various levels, the party aims to strengthen its grassroots presence and leadership hierarchy ahead of upcoming political engagements.
The Sangathan Parv in Nagaland will officially conclude with the announcement of the new BJP state president, marking the culmination of months of groundwork in the state. The election of the new state president is expected to play a pivotal role in defining the party’s trajectory in Nagaland, aligning with its broader national agenda.
Benjamin Yepthomi currently serves as the BJP state president in Nagaland.
