Silchar: Haflong, the picturesque town in Dima Hasao district, has added another feather to its tourism cap with the recent revamp of a site near Haflong Lake by the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC). Now known as “Eat Street Haflong”, the transformed site boasts a range of attractions, including a viewpoint, selfie point, walking zone, food joints, and a tranquil area for relaxing and fishing in the serene lake.

Quaint, serene, and rejuvenating, the revamped site has rapidly gained popularity among locals and tourists alike, especially the youth.

Previously, the area was notorious for becoming a haven for alcoholics and addicts after sundown. However, DHAC’s initiative has completely changed its landscape. The council has repaired the road, installed vibrant lighting, and pruned trees to create a fresh and inviting ambiance. Adding a cultural touch, mural paintings depicting the rich heritage of the Dimasa tribe and other local communities now adorn the walls, creating a vibrant fusion of culture and nature.

A variety of food joints have also been set up, offering a range of items such as Korean corn dogs, peri peri spiral potatoes, French fries, coffee, and masala lemonade, attracting food lovers to the site.

In recent weeks, crowds have been thronging the newly revamped destination to enjoy its scenic beauty and serene environment. Social media posts and pictures of the site have further amplified its popularity, with netizens praising DHAC for its commendable effort in transforming the area and boosting tourism in Haflong.

A resident of Haflong shared with EastMojo that the site was once deserted, with its dilapidated road and dark surroundings making it a den for drunkards and addicts. “The DHAC took the much-needed initiative of cleaning the site, repairing the road, installing lights, and adding mural paintings. This transformation has turned the place into a popular spot for locals and tourists. Their effort truly deserves appreciation,” the resident said.

Another local echoed similar sentiments, saying, “People avoided the site in the past due to its poor condition, but DHAC has done an excellent job decking it up and transforming it into a tourist hotspot. Such initiatives are bound to elevate tourism in Haflong.”

Haflong, the headquarters of Dima Hasao district and the only hill station in Assam, is located approximately 98 km from Silchar. Known for its natural beauty, the town is home to several tourist attractions, including Haflong Lake, Haflong Hill Point, Orchid Garden, Jatinga Bird Watching Centre, and Ethnic Village near Jatinga.

In recent years, a surge in tourist inflow has also led to the establishment of numerous hotels and homestays in Haflong to accommodate visitors, further strengthening its reputation as a prime hill destination in Assam.

The DHAC’s efforts with Eat Street Haflong signal a positive move toward sustainable tourism development in the region, giving locals and visitors an experience that blends culture, nature, and leisure.
