Imphal: In solidarity with the nationwide strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and several other hospitals in Manipur suspended outpatient department (OPD) services and elective surgeries for 24 hours. The strike began at 6 AM on August 17 and will continue until 6 AM on August 18.
However, emergency, casualty, and inpatient services remain operational during this period.
In a statement, RIMS’ media cell confirmed that the Teachers’ and Medical Officers Association (TAMOA) had resolved in a meeting on Friday to support the nationwide withdrawal of patient care services in protest against the fatal assault on a postgraduate student on duty at RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal. Emergency and inpatient services, however, remain unaffected.
Similar protests were also observed at Raj Medicity in Imphal and Leishiphung Christian Hospital (LCH) in Ukhrul district.
“We regret to inform that all routine OPD services at Leishiphung Christian Hospital, Ukhrul, are canceled on August 17 to protest the brutal killing of a female doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, and to show our solidarity with the medical fraternity,” LCH management stated.
They further urged individuals to join them in advocating for justice and improving the safety of women and healthcare professionals. “Your presence and support are crucial during this time,” the statement added.
The 24-hour strike has significantly impacted medical services in Imphal and other parts of the state.
The tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata last week has sparked outrage nationwide, leading to protests by doctors demanding justice for the victim and swift punishment for the culprits.
