A Continuing Medical Education (CME) workshop titled “Good Laboratory Practices and Infection Control in a Tertiary Care Hospital” was organized by the Microbiology Department of the PA Sangma International Hospital at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on June 28, 2024. The workshop aims to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure the safety and quality of laboratory practices in order to prevent infections.
The CME was initiated by Dr. Debarati Saha, Department of Microbiology, PIMC. The session on “Principles of Good Laboratory Practice” was delivered by Dr. (Prof) Lahari Saikia, Department of Microbiology, GMCH. The session on “ Fundamentals of Quality Control” was presented by Dr. Moushumi Saikia, Consultant Biochemicalist and Quality Head, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Apollo Hospitals Guwahati. The session on “Quality and safety aspects in Histopathology Laboratory” was headed by Dr. (Prof) Muktanjalee Deka, Head of the Department of Oncopathology, State Cancer Institute, GMCH.
Other sessions on “Overview of Quality Control and Infection Control in Microbiology Laboratory” and “Establishment of BMW Management & Hospital Infection Control Program from Scratch: Challenges & Way Forward” were also held. The workshop also provided an opportunity for the participants to present their study findings and share their recommendations on the topics discussed.
The chief guest of the inaugural session was Dr Manasi Bhattacharjee, Dean Academics, Prof and Head, Department of Physiology AIIMS Guwahati. The dignitaries who were present on the occasion included Padma Shri Dr. Sarbeswar Sahariah, Pro Vice-Chancellor USTM; Prof. Dr Biraj Kumar Das, Principal, PIMC and Dr. Swaroop Baruah, MEU Coordinator, PIMC. The workshop was a significant part of the continuing education program of USTM and it is expected that the participants will take the knowledge and skills they gained from the workshop and implement the measures necessary for the safety and quality of laboratory practices in their healthcare settings.
