To mark World Meteorological Day, a seminar was organised by the Indian Naval Meteorological Analysis Centre (INMAC) and the School of Naval Oceanology & Meteorology (SNOM) at Southern Naval Command on March 28, 2024, with the theme ‘At the Frontline of Climate Action’. The aim of the seminar was to provide an overview of the current challenges in the field of climate change and to discuss ways to overcome them.
The speakers at the seminar, including Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, emphasised the need for urgent and accurate focus on climate change. They also highlighted the importance of integrating climate change considerations into national security strategies. The Naval emphasised its commitment to adopting long-term, sustainable policies to address environmental concerns and integrate climate change considerations into its security strategy.
The seminar witnessed presentations on the latest techniques adopted by scientific agencies and climate data crunching used to support policy makers at the national level. The panel discussions on various topics, such as the ‘Effect of Weather and Climate Change on Naval Operations’, provided an insight into the latest methods used by the Indian Navy and other Indian scientific organisations in providing METOC inputs/forecasts for operational evolutions. The event also saw the launch of an indigenous mobile application INDRA (Indian Naval Dynamic Resource for Weather Analysis), which aims to disseminate weather-related information and forecasts, empowering decision-making and quick implementation. The application was developed by BISAG (Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics) in collaboration with the Directorate of Naval Oceanology and Meteorology, Indian Navy.
