Shillong: Meghalaya Police have shattered records for cash recovery related to drugs, marking the highest amounts in 50 years.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Meghalaya Director General of Police, Dr LR Bishnoi, disclosed that in 2022, cash recoveries amounted to Rs 36 lakh. This figure rose sharply to nearly Rs 45.6 lakh in 2023, and in 2024, the police have already seized Rs 60,000.
Dr. Bishnoi emphasized that the cumulative value of drugs recovered over the last two years, when calculated at market rates, amounted to a staggering Rs. 300 crores. These seizures indicate the pervasive nature of the drug trade in the state, with substantial quantities intercepted annually.
Despite these extensive efforts, the DGP expressed concern over the persistent drug abuse problem in Meghalaya. He attributed the state’s vulnerability to its proximity to the Golden Triangle, an area notorious for drug trafficking. Previously, Meghalaya served as a transit point for narcotics, but it has now become both a destination and transit hub.
To combat this menace, Meghalaya police have adopted a multi-faceted strategy involving awareness campaigns and rigorous enforcement measures. Special emphasis is placed on engaging local communities and educating youth through school and college programs. The police remain committed to preventing drug trafficking and ensuring the safety of the state’s residents.
In addition to cash seizures, the police provided detailed statistics on drug seizures, arrests, and the types of narcotics confiscated. The figures highlight the magnitude of the challenge faced by law enforcement agencies in Meghalaya.
Dr. Bishnoi commended the recent operations conducted by the Ri Bhoi police, which resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of marijuana. He underscored the importance of collaborative efforts and information sharing among law enforcement agencies in neighboring states to effectively combat drug trafficking networks.
The Meghalaya police continue to leverage technology and intelligence networks to trace and dismantle drug syndicates operating in the region. With concerted efforts and enhanced coordination, authorities remain determined to curb the menace of drug abuse and trafficking in the state.
