Guwahati: In response to concerns following a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in the Teesta Valley last October, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has moved to reassure the public about the safety of its dams in Arunachal Pradesh.
NHPC acknowledged the Teesta incident but highlighted significant differences between the Teesta River basin and the catchments of their dams in Arunachal Pradesh. AN Mohammad, a consultant with NHPC, emphasized these distinctions, stating that most glacial lakes in Arunachal Pradesh are located far away, often in the Chinese portion of the rivers. This distance allows for natural attenuation of floodwaters, reducing their intensity by the time they reach the dams.
Additionally, Mohammad pointed out the gentler slope of rivers in Arunachal Pradesh compared to the Teesta, resulting in slower-moving floodwaters and providing more reaction time for dam operators.
NHPC further stressed the robust design of their dams, all constructed from concrete, known for their superior resistance to failure. The dams also have significant reservoir capacities, absorbing the potential volume of a GLOF event, thus reducing downstream risks.
While addressing safety concerns, NHPC highlighted the importance of hydropower projects in the transition to clean energy sources. AN Mohammad emphasized hydropower’s role in combating global warming by offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
