Shillong: Without resorting to any blame game, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday acknowledged that the poor accommodation for athletes at the Meghalaya Games 2022 could have been avoided.
The CM said it’s always a learning experience, and that this game is happening after many years.
This is only the fourth time the Meghalaya Games is happening in the last 50 years.
“Yes, everything was not perfect but yes, we could have minimized the difficulties that they faced. But I guess that’s a process of how things happen. I’m sure that Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) as well as the department will learn from this. Avoidable? Absolutely, it was avoidable. Can we make it better? Absolutely, we can,” Sangma said.
Saying that it is not the time for blame game, the CM said the main event is the games and they have taken steps to rectify the problems that were there. He thanked the MSOA and the sports persons who were present, and thanked them for their patience. “Now let the games begin, let the games start and I think that’s really what is important now,” said Sangma.
Asked what alternative arrangements have been made, Sangma said he could not speak to everybody but he has been getting updates through pictures and messages from the athletes.
“I happen to be in touch with quite a number of them and they thanked me for the steps taken. I told them it’s not me, it’s the MSOA; they have realised the challenge and they’ve made the arrangements, and as I said they’re happy but of course it can be improved even further,” Sangma added.
Meanwhile, the department of sports clarified that the toilet, whose picture was shared, was not meant to be used and was locked but somehow somebody opened it, clicked pictures and posted it on social media.
