A mobile phone theft racket was busted with the arrest of two persons in Nagaon district of Assam. In the operation launched on Friday night, police recovered 134 stolen mobile phones worth Rs 20 lakh.
As per information, acting on a tip-off, a team of Haibergaon police station, led by officer-in-charge Taranga Patowary, took out a search operation in a rented house near the Haibergaon high school.
The duo arrested in connection with the case have been identified as Sonu Kumar Nuniya and Raj Kumar Nuniya, both from Jharkhand, police said. According to police, the duo tried to lure the police officer and offered him Rs 2 lakh as bribe. Patowary, however, gave them a befitting reply and arrested them on spot.
Superintendent of Nagaon police Anand Mishra applauded the officer in charge. “Well done Officer. He was offered an on-spot Bribe of Rs. 2 Lakh. The Officer gave them the on-spot lesson and Arrested. Everytime it has to be “Service before Self”. Proud of you SI @imtaranga !!” Mishra tweeted.
Praising Patowary for his honesty and excellent work, Anand Mishra says, “The entire operation was carried out single-handedly by Taranga. He has worked alone in the case. He is the only one to be credited for the success, he has launched a very good operation. He has done 2 years’ worth of work in just a single day.”
“He was alone at night (when he carried out the operation). In the morning, he showed us two mobile phones that he seized. He was offered Rs 2 lakh, we are all very proud of Taranga. He has done a very good job and showed a very good character. He has become a role model, I am personally inspired by his work,” Mishra added.
In the interrogation, both the accused accepted the charge brought against them and said that they have been staying in a rented home in Haibergaon for the past 5 months. They also revealed that the stolen mobile phones are sold in Dimapur.
“We will investigate more to bust the network. They have also engaged small kids to lift mobile phones. After recovering 134 mobile phones, I believe that mobile theft in Nagaon will be in control. And if there are more people involved in such crimes they will get a message that the police here is on high alert,” SP Mishra said.
