Aizawl: Mizoram’s main opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) will field well-known contractor and newly-enrolled member Laltlanmawia for the upcoming by-poll to Tuirial assembly seat slated for October 30, a senior party leader said on Wednesday.

ZPM president Lalliansawta said the party high-level meeting on Wednesday unanimously approved Laltlanmawia as the party’s nominee for the upcoming by-poll and as per the collective suggestion of the party east and west blocks from the Tuirial constituency. The Tuirial constituency falls under the Kolasib district.

He said that Laltlanmawia, who is from Kolasib town, has been actively involved in social work and church ministry. He also owned an LPG agency in Kolasib, he said.

Lalliansawta said the party will officially announce the name of the party candidate at a function to be held at the party headquarters in Aizawl on Thursday.

The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Congress have already decided their candidates for the seat.

While the MNF will field party leader K. Laldawngliana, head of a state-run public sector undertaking, the Congress party has nominated former legislator Chalrosanga Ralte, who is the brother of party treasurer and Congress Legislature Party leader Zodintluanga Ralte.

The BJP is yet to decide its candidate.

The bypoll to the Tuirial assembly seat will be held simultaneously with three parliamentary constituencies and 29 other assembly seats in various states on October 30.

The last date of filing nomination papers is October 8, while the last date for withdrawal is scheduled on October 13, as per the notification issued by the Election Commission on Tuesday.

Counting of votes will be held simultaneously with three parliamentary seats and 29 assembly seats on November 2.

The bypoll to the Tuirial assembly was necessitated by the death of incumbent MLA Andrew H. Thangliana of ZPM, who died on August 17.
