Guwahati: Launching the BJP’s election campaign ahead of the Assam polls early next year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday launched the Asom Darshan Scheme, an ambitious Rs 200 crore project to ensure 8,000 namghars across Assam morph into community centres.

The union minister also initiated a slew of other projects, including the establishment of Guwahati’s second medical college and nine new law colleges in the state.

Addressing a gathering during the ceremony, the Shah said, “There was a time when separatists ruled and the youth were given arms. But now, all the groups have joined the mainstream and Assam has become part of the growth engine.”

He added that the biggest success of BJP’s endeavours is the Bodoland accords. “I am proud that the recent Bodoland election recorded 80% polling, without any bloodshed,” Shah said.

Calling Bodoland elections as semi-finals, Shah hinted at the state assembly elections as the finals.

The Home Minister also lauded Assam for managing COVID-19 exceptionally well and recording 0.47% mortality rate, among the lowest in the world.

Shah is on a two-day visit to Assam and Manipur. He arrived at Guwahati late on Friday night and was received by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, along with finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, senior party leaders Baijayant Jay Panda and Ranjit Kumar Dass along with others among other.

Over 3,000 artists of various communities also greeted Shah at the Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport shortly after midnight on December 26.
