All India Congress Committee (AICC) expelled Assam MLA Ajanta Neog with immediate effect on Friday over “anti-party activities”.
A release signed by KC Venugopal said, “Hon’ble Congress President has approved the proposal of expulsion of Smt Ajanta Neog, MLA, Assam from the primary membership of the party for indulging in anti-party activities, with immediate effect.”
According to reports, last Saturday, the Golaghat MLA held a closed door meeting with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The meeting is said to have lasted for over an hour, and led to rife speculation of her defecting to BJP.
After this, Neog was removed from the post of district Congress committee president of Golaghat with immediate effect.
It is reported that Neog will join BJP during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state.
