Every year, India celebrates Constitution Day or Samvidhan Diwas on November 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution.
The Constitution is the guide book for the nation. It forms the basis of the fundamental rights, duties, and the structure of the union and state governments. The importance of the Constitution makes its commemoration day significant as well.
It is the document that declares India to be a sovereign, secular, socialist, and democratic republic and assures its citizens’ equality, liberty, and justice.

This day is also marked as the National Law Day. On November 26 in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India had formally adopted the Constitution of India which will come into effect a few months later on 26 January 1950. Also, it was the same day when the pledge of Purna Swaraj or complete independence was passed in the Lahore session of the Congress in the year 1930.
Constitution Day 2020: History
Keeping in view that on November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment notified the decision of the Government of India to celebrate November 26 as the ‘Constitution Day.’
After the adoption of the Constitution in 1949, the members of the Constituent Assembly of India worked hard on translating the Constitution from English to Hindi.
Two months later, on January 24 1950, two hand-written copies of the document were signed by the Constituent Assembly and after which on January 26, it officially came into force.
Constitution Day 2020: Significance
India’s Constitution is the longest in the world and the Constitution drafting committee has taken every possible effort to produce a document that will best reflect the ideals of the people of India. For this, they referred to the Constitutions of the US, the UK, Japan, Germany, and France and adopted impressionable principles and decorums.
The day is aimed at propagating the values stated in the Constitution and making sure that the duties and rights mentioned in the document are being implemented in their true spirit.
