GUWAHATI: Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi and state chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal have condoled the demise of Sattradhikar of Majuli’s Natun Kamalabari Sattra and a leading Vaishnavite scholar of the country, Narayan Chandra Goswami, who died in a private nursing home here on Tuesday.
The 76-year-old Goswami was suffering from chronic liver disease and had been under treatment since July 9.
Known for his scholarly works on Brajawali language and neo-Vaishnavite religion and Sattriya culture, he was also an authority on Sattriya dance.

A Sanskrit scholar of repute, the Sattradhikar has translated into Assamese the original Sanskrit Ramayana authored by Balmiki. He has also edited Kirtan Ghosa and Nam Ghosa, ankiya plays, borgeets of Srimanta Sankaradeva and his apostle Madhavadeva, and Sankaradeva’s literary works, among others.
He was honoured with the ‘Srimanta Sankardev Award’ by the Government of Assam in 2004 and has written several books to his credit, including Sattriya Sanskritir Swarnarekha, Brajawali Bhasar Byakaran Aru Abhidhan, Sattriya Nrityar Byakaran and Asomot Bhaonar Parampara; which are recognised as reference books by both Dibrugarh University and Gauhati University.
He has also penned nine plays and over 60 articles on various issues concerning neo-Vaishnava religion and culture of Assam. He also contributed to Asomiya Biswakosh published by Asam Sahitya Sabha.

Assam health and family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state minister for industries and commerce Chandra Mohan Patowary have also mourned the demise of the leading spiritual leader and scholar.
Media advisor and legal advisor to the chief minister Hrishikesh Goswami and Santanu Bharali respectively also mourned the demise of the spiritual leader.
State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass also mourned the death of Goswami.
