New Delhi: The combined efforts of the Centre and state/UT governments on proper and efficient medical management of COVID-19 pandemic has ensured India’s case fatality rate to fall below 2.5% for the first time, the Union government said on Sunday.
“India has one of the lowest fatality rates in the world,” said the Union health ministry on Sunday. “With effective containment strategy, aggressive testing and standardized clinical management protocols based on a holistic standard of care approach, the case fatality rate has significantly dipped,” it said.

Additionally, the case fatality rate is progressively falling and currently sits at 2.5%. Moreover, there are 29 states and UTs with case fatality rates lower than the national average. A total of five states and UTs have a zero case fatality rate, while 14 states and UTs have a case fatality rate of even less than 1%.
Under the guidance of the Centre, the state and UT governments have ramped up the testing and hospital infrastructure by combining public and private sector efforts. The ministry further stated that many states have conducted population surveys to map and identify the vulnerable population like the elderly, pregnant women, and those with co-morbidities.

“This, with the help of technological solutions like mobile apps, has ensured keeping the high-risk population under continuous observation, thus aiding early identification, timely clinical treatment, and reducing fatalities,” the ministry further said.
Congratulating the ground level frontline health workers of the likes of ASHAs and ANMs, the ministry said that they had done a commendable job “of managing the migrant population and to enhance awareness at the community level”.

Meanwhile, India saw another record in a single-day jump of 38,902 COVID-19 positive cases. This pushed India’s tally to 10,77,618 on Sunday and the number of recoveries increased to 6,77,422.
Eleven of the most COVID-19 affected countries in the world — the US, Brazil, Russia, Peru, Chile, Mexico, South Africa, The UK, Iran, Pakistan, Spain—altogether reported eight times more positive cases and 14 times more deaths than India, said the ministry of health.
