Guwahati: Following the death of a person in Goalpara district, the total number of deaths due to flood in Assam has risen to 34 as the situation in the state continued to remain grim and has affected more than 16 lakh people in the past 24 hours.

Brahmaputra river was flowing above the danger level in Jorhat, Goalpara and Dhubri districts. Similarly, Dhansiri in Golaghat, Jia Bharali in Sonitpur and Kopili in Nagaon were also flowing above the red mark.

Altogether 22 districts – Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and West Karbi Anglong – were reeling under the floods affecting 16,03,255 people and among them 12,597 are taking shelter in 163 relief camps.
In the past 24 hours, floodwaters affected 8,59,950 people in Barpeta district. In this district, 616 villages were reeling under flood in seven revenue circle areas.
Flood water have also affected the animals in Kaziranga National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. In Kaziranga, flood has claimed lives of 25 animals so far.
Floodwaters have also damaged a number of embankments in Chirang, Sivasagar and Jorhat districts and a number of roads in Chirang, Nagaon, Dibrugarh, Udalguri and Jorhat districts. Incidents of flood-triggered erosions have also been reported from Udalguri, South Salmara and Jorhat districts.
