Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools partner with Southampton FC

Guwahati: Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools (BBFS), India’s largest football academy, has announced a landmark partnership with English Premier League (EPL) side Southampton FC (SFC).

The collaboration, unveiled at an event in New Delhi, is aimed at transforming grassroots football and strengthening the coaching ecosystem in India.

As part of this strategic partnership, BBFS has become the International Academy Partner (IAP) of Southampton FC, granting it priority access to the renowned SFC Academy Performance Plan. This plan includes coaching philosophy, tactics, strategies, and training curricula from the U6-U16 levels, alongside exclusive online coaching resources.

The agreement also envisions player development programs, staff visits, and customised camps and tournaments to be held both in India and in England. These initiatives are designed to bridge the gap between Indian and international football, enhancing the skill sets of young players and coaches.

The Saints’ academy, widely regarded for producing world-class talent, has nurtured football stars such as Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Alan Shearer, and James Ward-Prowse. This partnership aims to bring the same level of expertise and professionalism to India.

The event was attended by Indian football legend Bhaichung Bhutia, Southampton FC legend Matt Le Tissier, Southampton FC Academy Director Andy Martino, Football Development Manager Tom Grevatt, and BBFS Co-Founder & CEO Kishore Taid.

A key focus of this partnership is enhancing grassroots coaching in India. BBFS, which currently trains over 2,000 coaches annually free of cost, will now have access to Southampton’s comprehensive coaching curriculum, tailored to meet the needs of Indian coaches by blending European football techniques with local dynamics.

Southampton FC will also provide extensive digital coaching resources, including session plans for outfield players and goalkeepers, webinars, workshops, and remote learning opportunities. This will be supplemented by online platforms like “The Boot Room” and “Grow Your Game Hub,” offering regular coaching content to BBFS.

In addition to promoting the partnership on digital platforms, the agreement includes appearances by Southampton’s first-team players and ambassadors. The collaboration will extend to retail, bespoke merchandise, and further coach education.

Bhaichung Bhutia said, “At BBFS, we have always targeted the grassroots and have been quite successful in doing so and this partnership will help us keeping up with that target.Southampton is a football club which has all the key ingredients- history, tradition, passion, pride, fighting spirit, style of play, rivalry and success. With our reach and pathways now secure, the partnership with Southampton, will ensure that we plug the gaps existing better, and deliver better players for the national team and also realise some of our own ambitions. This partnership is a significant step towards raising the standard of football coaching and player development in India. We are committed to nurturing the next generation of Indian footballers, and this collaboration brings us closer to our vision of producing global football stars.”

Southampton FC legend Matt Le Tissier added, “At Southampton, we’ve always prided ourselves on nurturing young talent and helping them reach their full potential. Bringing this philosophy to India, a country with such passion and untapped potential, is a fantastic opportunity. I believe this collaboration will pave the way for many young Indian footballers to achieve their dreams and make a mark on the global stage.”

Andy Martino said, “We believe India is now ready. We want to spread the Southampton Way, where it’s most needed. The only way to do that is to strengthen the coaching ecosystem at the grassroots because that is where players are made or broken. We can see that the next phase of growth will involve building players with better technique, control, stamina, strength and decision making. These are things which can only happen at grassroots level.”

Kishore Taid added, “Right from its inception, BBFS has been redefining the standards of football education in India. Through this partnership with SFC, we wish to further enhance the technical knowledge of our ecosystem and build a bridge for young footballers and coaches from India to the world.”
