“Play in the Joints: Tax Insights & The Play Continues,” a new book authored by renowned tax lawyer Dr. Aseem Chawla, was launched today at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The event saw the presence of prominent figures in Indian law, including Supreme Court Judge Ujjal Bhuyan, Attorney General R. Venkataramani, Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma, and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Law & Justice Dr. Manoj Kumar.
The book launch featured a keynote address by Attorney General Venkataramani, who commended Dr. Chawla’s work and emphasized the importance of law in protecting individual liberty. Justice Bhuyan, in his theme address, highlighted the complexity of tax laws and the importance of balancing taxpayers’ expectations with the government’s revenue needs. He also discussed the need for judges to be willing to move to different High Courts to broaden their experience and become better judges.
Justice Varma praised Dr. Chawla’s expertise in international tax law and lauded the book’s insights into complex issues like Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS). Dr. Kumar emphasized the significance of clear and concise drafting of laws to ensure a robust legal framework. He also urged the audience to assist lawmakers by providing input on draft legislation.
Dr. Chawla’s book delves into a wide range of tax-related topics, including money laundering, benami transactions, demonetization, cryptocurrency, and the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The book also features the author’s vision of the Indian economy in 2047.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Lalit Bhasin, President of the Society of Indian Law Firms.
