The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) with headquarters in India. The alliance aims to promote the conservation of big cats and their habitats and will receive initial financial support of Rs. 150 crore from the Government of India for five years.
The IBCA will have a multi-country, multi-agency coalition of 96 big cat range countries, non-range countries interested in big cat conservation, conservation partners, and scientific organisations working in the field of big cat conservation. It will also include business groups and corporations willing to contribute to the cause of big cats.
The alliance will focus on knowledge sharing, capacity building, networking, advocacy, finance and resources support, research and technical support, education, and awareness. It will also provide access to a central common repository of technical know-how and corpus of funds and will strengthen existing species-specific intergovernmental platforms, networks, and transnational initiatives on conservation and protection.
The IBCA believes that the conservation of big cats is crucial for the sustainable development of humans and the environment. The big cats play a vital role in maintaining the health of ecosystems and providing food and entertainment to communities. The IBCA is committed to working with governments, conservation organisations, and private sector partners to promote the sustainable use of natural resources and mitigate the challenges emanating from climate change.
