Kohima: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Daochier I. Imchen has won the 28 Koridang (ST) Assembly constituency bye-election in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district by a decisive margin of 3,123 votes.
According to the official Return of Election, Imchen secured 7,317 votes, defeating independent candidate Toshikaba, who polled 4,194 votes. Other candidates in the fray included Imliwapang with 3,633 votes and I. Abenjang with 3,219 votes. Imchatoba Imchen and T. Chalukumba Ao trailed behind with 147 and 144 votes respectively.
Out of 22,506 registered electors, a total of 18,745 votes were cast, reflecting a high voter turnout of over 82.21%. Of these, 18,654 votes were declared valid, while 48 voters opted for NOTA and 43 votes were rejected.
The bye-election was necessitated following the demise of sitting BJP MLA Imkong L. Imchen in November last year. Polling was conducted peacefully on April 9, 2026, witnessing strong public participation.
With this victory, Daochier I. Imchen has been duly elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. He received the Certificate of Election from Returning Officer Nockpai Konyak, SDO (Civil), at the Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner’s office on May 4.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders and workers celebrated the party’s win at the Dimapur District Office. MLA and Advisor for Tribal Affairs and Elections, Tovihoto Ayemi, attended the programme and congratulated party members for their efforts.
Addressing the gathering, Ayemi said the BJP has grown into the world’s largest political party, reflecting public confidence in its leadership. He highlighted the party’s expanding presence across the country, along with its NDA alliance partners governing nearly 20 states and Union Territories.
He credited the Koridang victory to the collective efforts of party leaders and karyakartas and expressed gratitude to voters for their support.
